What are Gargoyle Geckos?
A Dragon in Your Living Room
Part miniature dragon and part woodland acrobat, the gargoyle gecko (Rhacodactylus auriculatus) is a remarkable, tree-dwelling lizard native to New Caledonia. Its name comes from the raised knobs and ridges on its head, which resemble the horns of a carved stone gargoyle.
Most active during the evening and at night, these watchful little creatures are perfectly suited to habitats with places to climb and plant life.
A Distinctive Gargoyle Appearance
Raised ridges and horn-like bumps give each gecko its unmistakable profile. The size and definition of these features can vary from one individual to another and often become more pronounced as the gecko matures.
What makes them unique?
Colors That Come Alive
Gargoyle geckos appear in an extraordinary variety of colors and patterns, including reds, oranges, yellows, creams, browns, stripes, blotches, bands, and intricate reticulated markings. Their appearance can also shift between a softer “fired down” state and a darker or more vivid “fired up” state.
Individual from the Very Beginning
Beyond their colors and markings, each gargoyle gecko develops its own habits, temperament, and presence. Some are bold explorers, while others prefer to observe quietly from a favorite perch. Part of their charm is getting to know the individual behind the extraordinary appearance.

Built for Climbing
Climbers from Birth
Specialized toe pads and claws help them grip textured surfaces, while a thin, prehensile tail can curl around branches for additional support. Their natural climbing abilities make them fascinating to watch as they explore.
Forest Guardians
With their expressive eyes, intricate coloring, climbing skills, and wonderfully prehistoric features, gargoyle geckos seem almost like miniature forest guardians brought to life. At Arboreal Gargoyles, we celebrate what makes each one special while providing thoughtfully designed, naturalistic surroundings in which they can climb, hide, explore, and thrive.
